This site is run by me, Carl Beswick. I try to collect as little as possible and to handle what I do collect in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.
What the forms collect
There are three forms on the site. Each one only collects what you type or choose:
- Enquiries (on the Editing and Contact pages): your name, email address, what your enquiry is about, the length of your work if you choose one, and your message.
- Mentoring and course interest (on the Mentoring page): your name, email address, what you are interested in and where you are with your writing if you choose them, any message you add, and your agreement to hear from me.
- The Static Signals newsletter (on the home, Resources and article pages): your email address and your agreement to receive it.
With each submission the site also records the date and time and the web address it was sent from.
Where it goes
- Your submission is saved in a database run by Cloudflare, which hosts this site (Cloudflare D1).
- A copy is emailed, through Cloudflare’s email service, from hello@carlbeswick.com to my own inbox (a Gmail account) so that I can read it and reply. My reply goes to the address you gave.
- The newsletter list is kept in the same database. It is not connected to any mailing-list service.
I use your details only to reply to you, to tell you about mentoring and courses if you registered interest, or to send Static Signals if you subscribed. I do not sell or share them with anyone else.
Cloudflare and Google may store and process this information on servers outside Australia.
Spam protection
Each form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person, not a bot, is sending it. Turnstile looks at information about your browser and connection, including your IP address, to make that check. You can read Cloudflare’s Turnstile privacy addendum and privacy policy.
To limit repeated attempts, the site also keeps a scrambled, one-way version of your IP address (a salted hash, which cannot be turned back into the address) along with the time of the attempt. These records are deleted after 24 hours. Your actual IP address is not stored by the site.
Analytics and cookies
This site does not use analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and it does not set its own cookies. Cloudflare, as the host, handles standard technical information such as IP addresses in order to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
One journal page, the podcast with Des Barry, includes a SoundCloud player. SoundCloud may collect information or set cookies when that player loads, under SoundCloud’s privacy policy.
Seeing, changing or removing your details
You can ask to see the details I hold about you, to correct them, to have them deleted, or to be taken off the Static Signals list. Use the contact form or email hello@carlbeswick.com, and I will reply by email.
If you are not happy with how I have handled a privacy concern, you can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
